2019 Subaru Impreza brake fluid
Brake fluid absolutely applies to the 2019 Subaru Impreza. The model runs a hydraulic braking system that relies on glycol-based brake fluid, as outlined in the Subaru Owner’s Manual for the 2019 Impreza and standard maintenance schedules. Subaru specifies DOT 3 brake fluid that meets FMVSS No. 116 and SAE J1703 requirements. DOT 5 (silicone) must not be used.
In this Impreza, brake fluid transfers pedal force to the callipers and master cylinder, lubricates internal seals, and protects metal components from corrosion. It’s also critical for the ABS and stability control to operate as designed. Because modern brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture over time), its boiling point drops, which can lead to pedal fade under hard braking and internal corrosion if it’s not refreshed on schedule.
Service-wise, Subaru’s published guidance calls for brake fluid replacement at time-based intervals—typically every 30 months regardless of kilometres travelled. In Australian and New Zealand conditions (humidity, coastal air, and frequent stop–start or hilly driving), many workshops test fluid for moisture content and will recommend replacement sooner if results are borderline. Either way, using fresh, correct-spec DOT 3 fluid and a proper bleed/flush process keeps pedal feel consistent and braking performance reliable.
Good practice for the Impreza includes checking the reservoir level during regular servicing, keeping the cap and area clean before opening, and only topping up from a sealed container of the correct spec. If the level drops noticeably, that’s a cue to inspect pads and the system for leaks rather than just adding fluid. During a professional flush, a pressure or vacuum bleed is used, and technicians may cycle the ABS modulator to purge any trapped bubbles and old fluid—especially important if the brakes have been hot or the system’s been opened.
- Use only DOT 3 that meets FMVSS No. 116/SAE J1703
