2018 Volvo XC60 headlight-bulbs — are they used, and what owners should know
For the 2018 Volvo XC60, traditional headlight-bulbs aren’t used for the main low and high beams. According to Volvo’s owner’s manual for the MY18 XC60 (Lighting — Replacing bulbs) and Volvo VIDA/service documentation, the car is fitted with integrated LED headlamp units (including the Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights). Australian and New Zealand model specifications list LED headlights as standard, with no conventional, user-replaceable headlight-bulbs in the headlamp assembly.
Why no headlight-bulbs? The LED system is a sealed unit that bundles the light source, optics, cooling and control electronics for accurate beam shape, better brightness at lower power draw, and a very long service life. Because the unit is sealed and thermally managed, there’s no socketed halogen or HID bulb to swap out. If a fault occurs, Volvo specifies replacement or repair of the headlamp module by a qualified workshop, often with software configuration using VIDA, and headlight aim checks. This approach also supports features such as Active Bending Lights and automatic high beam where fitted.
Owners can still look after their XC60’s headlights as part of regular servicing, even without headlight-bulbs to replace:
- Keep the polycarbonate lenses clean with pH-neutral car shampoo, avoid harsh solvents that can haze the lens.
- Check beam aim after suspension or tyre changes, or when towing. Self-levelling systems should be tested during scheduled services.
- Watch for persistent internal condensation or lens damage and book the car in if spotted — the unit is sealed and should remain dry.
- If a warning appears for a headlamp fault, have the system scanned, technicians can diagnose the LED driver, cooling fan (if equipped), wiring, or the module itself.
- Where fitted, ensure headlamp washers work and keep washer fluid topped up to protect light output.
Some auxiliary front lamps on certain trims (like fog lamps) may use conventional bulbs, but these are not the primary headlight-bulbs. For the main headlights on a 2018 Volvo XC60 sold in Australia or New Zealand, there’s no routine bulb replacement — it’s all about caring for the LED units and getting workshop support if something fails.
Does the 2018 Volvo XC60 have replaceable headlight-bulbs?
No. The main low and high beams are integrated LED modules with no conventional replaceable headlight-bulbs. Volvo’s MY18 XC60 documentation specifies workshop-only replacement of the LED headlamp unit or internal components if a fault is detected.
What happens if a headlight fails on a 2018 XC60?
Book it into a qualified Volvo workshop. Diagnosis is done via scan tool, and repairs may involve removing the bumper to access the headlamp, replacing the LED module or the complete unit, and then checking aiming and performing software configuration. DIY bulb swaps aren’t applicable for the main headlights.
Can the headlights be upgraded to something brighter?
There are no “brighter bulbs” to fit because the car doesn’t use headlight-bulbs. Any upgrade must be a compliant LED headlamp assembly or software-enabled feature where available. Always ensure parts and settings meet local ADR/WOF requirements and avoid non-approved retrofit kits.
