2018 Volvo XC60 exhaust gasket — what it does and when to replace it

Based on Volvo’s VIDA workshop information and the Genuine Volvo parts catalogue for the 2018 XC60 (SPA platform with VEA 2.0-litre engines), this model does use exhaust gaskets/sealing rings. These include a metal sealing ring at the turbocharger to front exhaust pipe joint, and additional gaskets at certain flange or aftertreatment connections. On many VEA engines the exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head, so there isn’t a separate manifold gasket — but exhaust gaskets are still present elsewhere in the system. These parts are also listed by OE suppliers commonly used by Volvo, such as Elring and Victor Reinz.

On a 2018 Volvo XC60, the exhaust gasket’s job is simple but critical: seal the joints so exhaust gases flow through the turbo, catalytic converter and DPF/SCR hardware without leaking. That tight seal keeps noise down, prevents fumes entering the cabin, protects nearby components from heat, and helps sensors read correctly so the engine can manage fuel, boost and emissions properly.

While not a scheduled service item, exhaust gaskets are considered single‑use in most spots. Any time the front pipe is removed from the turbo, or a flange joint is disturbed during work on the turbo, cat, DPF or EGR-related components, the gasket or sealing ring should be renewed. The metal crush rings and MLS (multi‑layer steel) styles are designed to deform once to make the seal
