2018 Volkswagen Amarok Spark Plugs — Not Applicable for Aussie and Kiwi Models
For the 2018 Volkswagen Amarok sold in Australia and New Zealand, spark plugs aren’t a thing. Those Amaroks run diesel engines (primarily the 3.0 V6 TDI, and some 2.0 TDI variants), and diesel engines don’t use spark plugs at all — they rely on compression ignition and glow plugs for cold starts. That’s outlined in Volkswagen’s technical training for the 3.0L V6 TDI (EA897) self‑study program, the Amarok owner’s manual (which references the diesel pre‑heat/glow system rather than spark ignition), and general diesel system references such as Bosch’s Automotive Handbook.
Why no spark plugs? In a diesel, the air is squeezed to a very high compression ratio, making it hot enough that when fuel is injected, it ignites on its own. There’s no need for an external spark. Glow plugs are fitted instead to help with cold starts by warming the combustion chamber. So, while petrol engines absolutely need spark plugs to ignite the air–fuel mix, the 2018 Amarok’s diesel setup doesn’t use them.
What should owners look after instead of spark plugs? Think glow plugs and the usual diesel service items. If the Amarok is cranking longer on cold mornings, idling roughly when cold, puffing white smoke at start-up, or showing a glow plug warning, it might be time to test or replace the glow plugs. Sticking to proper diesel servicing will keep it happy under the bonnet.
- Have glow plugs tested if cold starts get sluggish or a warning appears.
- Keep up with fuel filter changes to protect the high‑pressure system.
- Use quality diesel and follow the DPF-friendly driving tips to help regeneration.
- Check the battery and starter
