Parts for your 2018 Toyota Prius-Brake fluid

2018 Toyota Prius brake fluid — what it does and when to change it

Brake fluid is definitely used on the 2018 Toyota Prius. Technical sources, including the Toyota Owner’s Manual for the 2018 Prius (XW50) and Toyota service literature for the Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, specify hydraulic brake fluid meeting SAE J1703 / FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3. The ECB system still uses conventional hydraulic calipers and a brake actuator/accumulator, so clean, correct brake fluid is essential even though the Prius also relies on regenerative braking.

On this Prius, brake fluid’s job is to transfer force from the pedal (and the electronic actuator) to the calipers with a consistent, responsive feel. It must tolerate heat without boiling, resist moisture absorption, and protect internal components from corrosion. Because the Prius blends regen and friction braking, the hydraulic side can go long periods with light use, making fluid condition and system health checks just as important as on any non-hybrid.
