2018 Toyota LandCruiser drive belt — what it does and when to replace it
A drive belt is absolutely fitted to the 2018 Toyota LandCruiser (200 Series). Toyota’s technical sources — including the 2018 LandCruiser Owner’s Manual (Maintenance and Specifications), the LandCruiser 200 Series workshop/repair manual “Drive Belt” section on inspection/replacement, and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue listings for the 3UR‑FE petrol and 1VD‑FTV diesel — all show a V‑ribbed (serpentine) accessory drive belt and an automatic tensioner. It’s a core part of the vehicle’s ancillary drive system, so it’s relevant to every 2018 model, whether petrol or diesel.
The drive belt’s job is to spin key ancillaries off the crankshaft, typically the alternator, air‑con compressor and power steering pump. On some variants the water pump is also belt‑driven. Without a healthy belt, charging, cooling, steering assistance and cabin comfort quickly go out the window — not ideal under the bonnet in Aussie or Kiwi conditions.
- It transfers engine power to alternator, A/C compressor and power steering pump.
- It’s kept tight by an automatic tensioner and guided by idler pulleys.
- Diesel models also have a separate timing belt for the cams — that’s different to this accessory belt.
Servicing-wise, Toyota calls for condition‑based replacement: inspect the belt, tensioner and idlers at every regular service (typically 10,000 km/6 months for local schedules). Look for cracking, fraying, glazing, missing ribs and edge wear. Listen for chirps or squeals at start‑up, watch for a flickering battery light, heavy steering, weak A/C at idle, or elevated temps if the water pump on that variant is belt‑driven.
- Many owners replace the belt preventatively around 90,000–120,000 km or 6–8 years, sooner if towing, touring, dusty roads or lots of heat cycles are the norm.
- Swap the tensioner and idler pulleys with the belt if there’s noise, wobble or roughness — they age together.
- Use a quality EPDM belt to OE spec
