2018 Toyota Land Cruiser Brake Fluid

Brake fluid absolutely is used on the 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser. Toyota’s own technical literature (the 2018 Land Cruiser J200 Owner’s Manual and Toyota service/repair information) specifies hydraulic brake fluid meeting SAE J1703 and FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 standards, with DOT 4 acceptable if DOT 3 isn’t available. Toyota’s Australian and New Zealand maintenance schedules also list brake fluid as a service item, typically replaced every 24 months.

On this Land Cruiser, brake fluid is the lifeblood of the braking system. When the driver presses the pedal, that force travels via the master cylinder through the fluid to the callipers and wheel cylinders, clamping the pads onto the rotors. The fluid also plays nicely with the vehicle’s ABS, stability and traction systems by allowing precise hydraulic modulation. Quality fluid resists boiling during heavy braking or towing and helps protect internal components from corrosion.

Because brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the air), its boiling point drops over time and it can promote rust inside lines and callipers. That’s why the logbook calls for periodic replacement—generally every 24 months or about 40,000 km in local conditions. For the 2018 Land Cruiser, use a high-quality DOT 3 fluid that meets SAE J1703/FM VSS No. 116
