Parts for your 2018 Subaru Xv-Brake fluid

2018 Subaru XV brake fluid — what it does and when to change it

The 2018 Subaru XV absolutely uses brake fluid. Technical references including the Subaru XV (G5X) Owner’s Manual and Subaru Workshop Manual specify a hydraulic brake system that requires FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, and include routine checks of the brake fluid reservoir. So, brake fluid is very much relevant to servicing this model.

On the XV, brake fluid transfers pedal force to the calipers, works with ABS and stability control, resists boiling under heat, and protects internal components from corrosion. Because it’s hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture over time), its boiling point drops and its colour darkens, which can lead to a soft pedal and longer stopping distances if left too long. That’s why Subaru’s service guidance in Australia and New Zealand typically calls for a full brake fluid change about every 2 years or around 30,000 km, and always sooner if contamination or system work (like caliper or hose replacement) has occurred.

For top-ups, the spec is DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid meeting FMVSS No. 116. DOT 4 is commonly used and is fully compatible with DOT 3
