2018 Nissan Serena (C27) Fuel Pump — Purpose, Care and Replacement

Technical confirmation: a fuel pump is fitted to the 2018 Nissan Serena (C27). Nissan’s Electronic Service Manual for the C27 (Engine Control and Fuel/Lubrication sections) and the Nissan global parts catalogue list an in‑tank electric “fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump” across 2018 petrol variants. MR20DD direct‑injection models additionally use an engine‑mounted high‑pressure fuel pump supplied by the in‑tank pump.

The fuel pump on a 2018 Serena quietly does the heavy lifting, pushing petrol from the tank to the engine at the correct pressure so it starts cleanly, idles smoothly, and pulls well up the motorway. In C27 models it’s an in‑tank electric module that includes the pump, a strainer, pressure control, and the level sender. On MR20DD direct‑injection versions, that in‑tank pump feeds a separate high‑pressure pump on the engine, while e‑POWER and other port‑injected variants rely solely on the in‑tank unit. Either way, good pump performance is essential for proper fueling and emissions.

There’s no scheduled replacement interval for the Serena’s in‑tank pump, but a bit of smart care goes a long way. Keep at least a quarter‑tank of fuel to help cool the pump and avoid sucking up sediment. Stick to clean, quality petrol, and if the vehicle sits for months, consider fresh fuel to minimise varnish build‑up. Common warning signs include hard starting, a whining noise from the tank area, hesitation under load, surging, or engine faults like lean mixture and low fuel pressure. If these pop up, a fuel pressure test and scan for related DTCs is the next step.

When replacement is needed, it’s a straightforward but safety‑critical job. The pump is accessed via a service cover under the rear floor area. Disconnect the battery, relieve fuel pressure, work in a well‑ventilated space, and keep sparks and cigarettes far away. The locking ring and sealing O‑ring should be renewed
