2018 Nissan Pathfinder drive-belt: what it does and how to look after it
A drive-belt is absolutely relevant on the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder (R52). Technical references including the Nissan Factory Service Manual for the 2018 Pathfinder (R52, VQ35DD engine) and Nissan’s Maintenance Schedule list inspection of the accessory drive belts as a routine service item. The FSM details two belts: an alternator/accessory drive belt with an automatic tensioner, and a separate A/C compressor “stretch” belt without a tensioner. Major OE parts catalogues from Gates and Dayco also catalogue both belts for this model, corroborating fitment. Power steering is electric on this vehicle, and the engine’s timing chain drives the water pump internally, so those systems don’t use external belts.
On this Pathfinder, the drive-belts’ job is straightforward but vital. The main belt spins the alternator so the battery stays charged and the electrics keep humming along. The separate stretch-fit belt turns the air-con compressor, keeping the cabin cool on hot Aussie or Kiwi days. While the cooling water pump isn’t on the external belt, losing the alternator belt will still leave the vehicle running only on whatever charge is left in the battery—never an ideal situation out on the open road.
For servicing, the smart play is regular inspection and timely replacement. A good rule of thumb is a belt check every service (around 10,000–15,000 km or 6–12 months). Look for cracking, glazing, frayed edges, missing ribs, or any squeal or chirp—especially at cold start or when the A/C kicks in. In local conditions, many belts last 90,000–120,000 km, but age, heat, dust, and short trips can shorten that. Replace on condition rather than chasing a hard interval.
Important: the A/C compressor belt is a stretch-fit type. It doesn’t have a tensioner and isn’t meant to be re-used. Proper installation requires the correct procedure and tool
