2018 Mazda 3 ignition leads: are they fitted?
Short answer: ignition leads aren’t used on the 2018 Mazda 3. The Skyactiv-G petrol engines in the BM/BN-series Mazda 3 run coil-on-plug (COP) ignition, where each spark plug has its own pencil-style ignition coil sitting directly on top. That’s confirmed by Mazda’s BM/BN Mazda3 Workshop Manual (Ignition System), the Mazda Electronic Parts Catalogue for 2018 models, and aftermarket catalogues from NGK and Denso that list COP coils and iridium plugs but no high-tension (HT) leads. If it’s a Skyactiv-D diesel, there aren’t any spark plugs at all, so ignition leads aren’t part of the picture either.
Why no ignition leads? COP removes the long HT leads to cut energy losses and electrical noise, and gives the ECU tight control of spark timing for cleaner burn, better fuel economy and improved reliability. With the coil mounted right on the plug, there’s less to degrade from heat and vibration, and fewer parts to track down during a misfire.
What the 2018 Mazda 3 does have is a set of spark plugs and four individual coils with short rubber boots. Routine servicing focuses on the plugs (typically iridium, with replacement intervals often around 120,000 km or 6 years—always check the vehicle’s logbook for the exact schedule in Australia or New Zealand). Coils aren’t a scheduled replacement item, but they should be inspected if there’s a misfire, rough idle, hard starting, or poor fuel economy.
Helpful tips for owners and techs:
- Watch for misfire fault codes (e.g., P0300–P0304), hesitation under load, or a flashing MIL.
- If removing coils, inspect boots for carbon tracking or cracks and check for oil in plug tubes.
- Avoid blasting the engine bay with water, moisture can upset coil connections.
- Use quality iridium plugs, correct torque, and the specified gap (plugs are usually pre-gapped).
- There’s no point shopping for “performance leads” — they don’t fit a COP system.
Does a 2018 Mazda 3 have ignition leads?
It doesn’t. Skyactiv-G models use coil-on-plug ignition with no traditional HT leads, as shown in the Mazda Workshop Manual and parts catalogue, and echoed by NGK/Denso catalogue listings. Skyactiv-D diesels don’t use spark plugs at all.
What should be serviced instead of ignition leads?
Stick to the scheduled spark plug replacements in the logbook and inspect the individual ignition coils and boots if there’s a symptom. That’s the smart way to keep the ignition system sweet on a COP-equipped Mazda 3.
Can ignition leads be retrofitted for performance?
No. The system isn’t designed for leads, and there’s no performance gain to be had. If chasing a smoother run, focus on quality plugs, clean coil connections, and up-to-date engine software and maintenance.
