2017 Toyota RAV4 drive-belt tensioner: what’s fitted and how to look after it

Technical sources indicate the 2017 Toyota RAV4 may or may not use a drive-belt tensioner, depending on the powertrain. Toyota’s Repair Manual and Electronic Parts Catalogue list an automatic serpentine-belt tensioner for the 2.0‑litre (3ZR‑FAE), 2.5‑litre petrol (2AR‑FE) and the diesel variants, while Dayco and Gates application catalogues also specify a belt and tensioner on those engines. By contrast, the 2017 RAV4 Hybrid (2AR‑FXE with eCVT) has no conventional accessory drive belt: the A/C compressor is electric, the 12‑volt system is supplied by a DC‑DC converter, and there’s no alternator, so no belt tensioner is used.

For petrol and diesel 2017 RAV4 models that do run a serpentine belt, the drive-belt tensioner is the unsung hero keeping everything humming. Its spring-loaded arm and pulley maintain the right tension on the belt so the alternator, water pump and A/C compressor spin as they should. With proper tension, there’s less slip, less squeal and better charging, cooling and cabin comfort. It also helps the belt track straight, which reduces fraying and glazing over time.

Servicing-wise, it’s smart to inspect the belt and tensioner at each service or at least every 15,000 km. Under the bonnet, look and listen: is the belt cracking or shiny? Any chirps on cold start, flickering lights at idle, or a wobbling tensioner arm? That’s the cue to dig deeper. A quick check with a spanner on the tensioner’s hex will tell if the spring action feels smooth and firm
