2017 Subaru Legacy brake fluid — what it is and how to look after it

Brake fluid absolutely applies to the 2017 Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Owner’s Manual for the 2017 Legacy specifies the use of FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 brake fluid, and the Subaru Service Manual (brake system section) details hydraulic disc brakes and ABS/ESC systems that rely on brake fluid for operation. Those technical sources make it clear this model uses a conventional hydraulic braking system, so brake fluid is essential.

For a 2017 Subaru Legacy, brake fluid’s job is to transfer pedal force through the master cylinder, ABS/ESC modulator and lines to the callipers at each wheel. It needs to do this reliably across hot and cold conditions, resist boiling under heavy braking, and protect internal components from corrosion. Because modern glycol-based fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the air), its boiling point drops over time and it can invite rust inside delicate valves and pistons if it’s neglected.

As part of regular servicing, this model benefits from a brake fluid flush about every 24 months or 40,000 km, or sooner if moisture content or boiling point tests say it’s due. Many Australian and New Zealand service schedules align with that timeframe. Top-ups between services shouldn’t be common—low fluid can indicate pad wear or a leak—so it’s worth investigating the cause before simply filling the reservoir.

Only use fresh, sealed FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 fluid as per the 2017 Legacy Owner’s Manual. If an emergency top-up is unavoidable, some workshops may use DOT 4 due to compatibility, but the safest bet is to match DOT 3 and then flush to the specified type at the next opportunity. Never use DOT 5 silicone fluid. Keep the reservoir area clean before opening, and avoid spilling fluid on paintwork.

  • Quick checks: fluid should be a clear to light-amber colour at a level between MIN and MAX
