2017 Ford Transit Engine Oil Maintenance Tips

The 2017 Ford Transit is a workhorse known for its reliability and durability, and like any vehicle, its performance greatly depends on using the right engine oil and following correct maintenance procedures. The engine oil is essential in keeping the engine components lubricated and working smoothly, and for the 2017 Ford Transit, using the correct specification of engine oil is key. This vehicle typically requires an engine oil that adheres to the SAE 5W-20 or 5W-30 viscosity grade, which is specified in the owner's manual. It's also crucial to use oil that meets the API certification such as SN or newer as this ensures the oil meets specific quality standards for performance.

Changing the engine oil regularly is one of the most important maintenance tasks to keep your Ford Transit running smoothly. Typically, it is recommended to change the oil every 7,500 to 10,000 kilometres, although you should always refer to your specific vehicle's owner's manual for the most accurate guidance. However, if your Transit is often subjected to severe driving conditions - like frequent towing, carrying heavy loads, or regular stop-and-start city driving - you might need to change the oil more frequently.

Before changing the engine oil, ensure you have the right tools and materials:

  1. New oil filter - choose one that matches the specific requirements for the 2017 Ford Transit.
  2. Correct quantity and grade of new engine oil.
  3. Oil wrench and socket set.
  4. Oil drain pan to catch the old oil.
  5. Funnel to pour new oil into the engine easily.
  6. Rag or paper towels for cleanup.

To replace the engine oil, follow these steps:

  1. Run the engine for a few minutes to warm up the oil which helps it drain out smoothly. Then, make sure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  2. Turn off the engine and open the bonnet to access the engine compartment.
  3. Place the oil drain pan beneath the oil pan of the engine, and remove the drain plug with a socket wrench. Allow all the old oil to completely drain out.
  4. Once the oil has completely drained, replace the drain plug securely.
  5. Use the oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Be prepared for a bit more oil to spill when you take the old filter off.
  6. Prepare the new oil filter by applying a bit of new oil to the gasket on the top of the filter - this helps to create a good seal. Install the new filter by hand, being careful not to over-tighten.
  7. Refill the engine with new oil using the correct amount as specified in your owner's manual. The funnel can help to prevent spillage.
  8. Start the engine and let it run for a minute. Check underneath for any signs of leaks around the oil filter and drain plug.
  9. After turning off the engine, wait a few minutes for the oil to settle then check the oil level using the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary to reach the correct level.

Staying on top of engine oil changes is not only essential for your vehicle's longevity, it also maintains fuel efficiency and reduces harmful emissions. For those less comfortable performing an oil change themselves, or when you simply don't have the time for a DIY approach, consider taking your Transit to a qualified service centre. Certified technicians can ensure that oil changes are conducted to factory specifications.

Regular checking of your oil level between services is also a good practice. Make it a habit to inspect your levels at least once a month, especially before long journeys. This ensures there are no leaks and that your engine has adequate lubrication to function at its best. Doing so will keep your Ford Transit operating like new for miles to come.
