2017 Ford Everest exhaust gasket: what it does and when to replace
Technical documentation confirms the 2017 Ford Everest does use exhaust gaskets. The Ford Workshop Manual for the UA Everest/Ranger platform (2015–2018) specifies discarding and renewing the exhaust manifold gasket during removal/installation on the 2.2L and 3.2L Duratorq TDCi engines, and also details gaskets at turbocharger interfaces and EGR pipe joints. Ford’s Global Parts Catalogue (Microcat) for UA Everest lists an exhaust manifold gasket and turbo outlet/downpipe gaskets for these engines. So it’s not a gasketless system, though some joints use V-band clamps without a gasket.
On a 2017 Everest, exhaust gaskets seal hot gas paths to keep the system tight and quiet. Typical locations include the cylinder head to exhaust manifold, turbocharger to manifold or downpipe, and EGR connections. A healthy gasket prevents ticking noises, exhaust smells, and soot leaks, while also helping the turbo spool properly and supporting DPF performance. If a gasket leaks, the engine can lose boost, the DPF can cop excess soot, and the cabin may cop fumes — not ideal for family trips or towing around Aotearoa and Australia.
- Common signs it’s time: a ticking sound on cold start that softens warm, visible soot marks around flanges, a sharp exhaust smell near the bonnet, a slight hiss under load, a dip in power or economy, or frequent DPF regens.
- Service tip: exhaust gaskets aren’t a routine replacement item, but they should be inspected at scheduled services (especially on high‑kilometre or heavily worked vehicles) and always renewed if disturbed during turbo/manifold work.
When replacement is on the cards, always use new, correct-spec gaskets and quality hardware. Clean mating faces, check the manifold for flatness or cracks, and follow the workshop manual torque sequence and specs. Note that some Everest joints (like certain turbo/DPF connections) use V-band clamps with no gasket
