2016 Toyota bB crank-angle sensor: what it does and when to service it

The 2016 Toyota bB is fitted with a crank-angle sensor (also called a crankshaft position sensor). Toyota’s Electronic Service Manual for the QNC20/21 series shows the ECU relies on a dedicated crankshaft signal for fuel injection and spark timing, and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue lists a “Sensor, Crank Position” for the 1.5L 1NZ-FE and 1.3L K3-VE engines used in this model line. Without this sensor, the engine simply wouldn’t run.

On the bB, the crank-angle sensor monitors crankshaft speed and exact angular position, feeding a high-resolution signal to the ECU. That lets the ECU control ignition timing, injector phasing, VVT operation and misfire detection, and it’s also used for sync during starting. It’s mounted low at the timing cover near the crank pulley area, reading a toothed reluctor on the crank.

There’s no scheduled replacement interval for the crank-angle sensor, it’s a fit-and-forget item unless there’s a fault. As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to check for oil leaks around the timing cover, inspect the sensor connector and loom for heat damage or chafing, and scan for pending fault codes such as P0335–P0339. Typical symptoms of a failing sensor include:

  • Hard starting or a no-start when hot or cold
  • Intermittent stalling, rough idle or surging at cruise
  • Poor fuel economy and a check engine light
  • Tachometer drop-outs or misfire-type hesitation

Replacement is straightforward: disconnect the battery, unplug the connector, remove the retaining bolt, and gently twist the sensor free. Check for metal filings on the tip and replace the O-ring. Fit the new genuine or high-quality OEM-equivalent sensor, lightly oil the O-ring, seat it squarely and torque the retaining bolt to spec (light M6 bolt torque is typically around 9 N·m). Reconnect, clear DTCs, and confirm with a road test and live-data check. No manual gap adjustment is required on this application.

Using a scan tool and, if needed, an oscilloscope helps distinguish a faulty sensor from wiring faults or a timing issue. Given how critical the signal is, cheap knock-offs can cause headaches, genuine Toyota part numbers commonly referenced for these engines in the EPC include 90919-05053 (1NZ-FE) and 90919-05046 (K3-VE). If in doubt, quote the VIN to a Toyota dealer to confirm the exact part.

  • How long does a crank-angle sensor last on a 2016 Toyota bB?
Most last the life of the vehicle. Heat, oil contamination, or wiring damage are the usual reasons they fail. There’s no kilometre-based service interval, replace it only if faulty.
  • Is it safe to drive with a dodgy crank-angle sensor?
It might run poorly or stall, and it may not restart once hot. Misfires from bad timing can also stress the catalytic converter. Best to sort it promptly rather than risk being stranded.
  • How long does replacement take, and do they need special tools?
Access is generally easy with basic hand tools, allow about 0.4–0.8 hours depending on engine and workshop setup. A scan tool is handy to confirm fix and clear codes.
