2016 Toyota Avensis Oil Cap — What It Does and How to Look After It

Based on Toyota’s own technical documentation, the 2016 Toyota Avensis absolutely uses an engine oil filler cap. The Avensis (T27 series) owner’s manual shows the “Engine oil filler cap” in the engine compartment overview, and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue lists a “cap sub-assembly, oil filler” for the 1.8L petrol (2ZR-FAE) and the diesel variants used in this model year. Workshop literature on Toyota Techdoc likewise references removing/refitting the oil filler cap during standard servicing. So, yes — the oil cap is relevant and fitted on the 2016 Avensis.

The oil cap’s job is simple but critical. It seals the top of the rocker cover where engine oil is added, keeping contaminants out and oil vapour in. A good seal maintains proper crankcase pressure and helps the PCV system work as designed. If the cap’s seal goes hard or the cap’s threads wear, oil mist can escape, leading to grime around the top of the engine, that whiffy burnt-oil smell under the bonnet, and in worse cases, minor oil loss.

As part of regular servicing on a 2016 Toyota Avensis, it’s smart to check the oil cap every time the oil is changed:

  • Inspect the rubber O-ring or gasket: if it’s brittle, flattened, cracked, or swollen, replace it (or the whole cap).
  • Confirm the cap seats squarely and turns smoothly. It should go on by hand — snug, not gorilla-tight. No tools required.
  • Wipe the fill neck and cap clean before refitting to keep dust and grit out of the engine.
  • Look for any oil film around the cap area after a drive. Persistent misting often points to a tired seal.

Replacement is straightforward and inexpensive. Genuine and quality aftermarket caps for the Avensis are readily available
