2016 Mazda BT-50 Coolant
Coolant is absolutely relevant and used on the 2016 Mazda BT-50. The 2.2L and 3.2L Duratorq diesel engines are liquid-cooled, and Mazda specifies a pressurised cooling system that runs on long-life ethylene glycol coolant. Technical sources including the 2016 BT-50 Owner’s Manual (Cooling System section) and Mazda workshop literature for the 2.2/3.2 Duratorq engines call for Mazda Genuine FL22 long-life coolant or an approved equivalent meeting the same spec.
In this ute, coolant does far more than stop freezing or boiling. It carries heat away from the engine, helps stabilise operating temperature, protects alloy and steel components from corrosion, and lubricates the water pump. Keeping the coolant fresh is a big part of protecting the head gasket, turbo, EGR cooler and heater core—especially when towing, off-roading, or dealing with hot Aussie and Kiwi summers.
Servicing the BT-50’s cooling system is straightforward but worth doing by the book. Mazda’s FL22 is a premixed long-life coolant, so there’s no need to add water—just top up with the same spec when cold. Don’t mix types
