2016 Honda CR‑V Radiator — purpose, maintenance and replacement

Based on technical sources — the Honda CR‑V Owner’s Manual (Cooling System), the 2015–2016 Honda CR‑V Workshop/Service Manual (Cooling System), and Honda Genuine Parts catalogues listing a radiator assembly for the 2016 model — the 2016 Honda CR‑V is fitted with a liquid‑cooled aluminium radiator and electric cooling fans. A radiator is therefore relevant and used on this vehicle.

The radiator’s job is simple but vital: it sheds the engine’s heat into the air so the 2.4‑litre petrol engine stays in its sweet spot. Coolant absorbs heat in the block and head, runs through the radiator’s thin tubes and fins, and the airflow (plus the fans at low speed) carries the heat away. Keeping temperatures stable protects head gaskets, prevents pre‑ignition, keeps oil effective, and helps the cabin heater work properly.

For servicing, Honda specifies using Honda Long‑Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (blue). It’s premixed, so no extra water is needed. Typical Honda guidance is an initial change at up to around 10 years/200,000 km, then every 5 years/100,000 km thereafter. In Aussie and Kiwi conditions — lots of heat, traffic, or towing — many workshops recommend testing coolant condition and pH sooner and not pushing the absolute maximum interval.

  • Check the coolant level in the reservoir regularly
