2015 Toyota Vitz/Yaris tail-lights — what they do and how to look after them
Tail-lights are absolutely fitted to the 2015 Toyota Vitz/Yaris and are a required safety device. Toyota’s service literature for the XP130-series Vitz/Yaris describes a rear combination lamp that includes tail (rear position), stop, indicator and reverse functions. Regulatory standards also mandate them: Australia’s ADR 13/00 (Installation of Lighting) and New Zealand’s Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004 require rear position lamps on passenger cars. Owner’s manuals for the 2015 Yaris/Vitz likewise detail bulb replacement for the rear combination lights.
On the 2015 Vitz/Yaris hatch, the tail-lights sit high on the rear quarters for clear visibility. Their main job is simple but vital: make the car easy to see from behind at night, in rain, or in dim light, and signal braking. Most AU/NZ models use replaceable incandescent bulbs inside a sealed lens, while some JDM Vitz grades may use LED assemblies. If it’s LED, the assembly is typically replaced as a unit, if it’s bulb-based, individual bulbs can be swapped in minutes.
As part of routine servicing, it pays to give the tail-lights a quick once-over:
- Check operation: tail, brake, indicator and reverse on both sides. Don’t forget the number plate lamps.
- Inspect lenses for cracks, fading, or moisture. Condensation can hint at a compromised seal.
- If a light is out, check the bulb first, then the “TAIL” fuse and the earth points. On hatchbacks, also inspect the wiring in the rubber boot between body and tailgate for broken conductors.
- When replacing bulbs, match the wattage and base type from the owner’s manual. Avoid touching the glass with bare fingers.
- If upgrading to LED bulbs, choose ADR/NZ-compliant units with the correct colour and intensity, and ensure indicators flash at the legal rate.
DIY bulb swap is straightforward: open the tailgate, remove the lamp’s retaining screws, ease the lamp straight back (mind the locating pins), twist out the bulb holder, change the bulb, and refit. Make sure seals and gaskets sit properly to keep water out. If the car has factory LED tail-lights and one segment fails, a new lamp assembly is usually the fix.
For WOF/rego peace of mind, keep both tail-lights bright and evenly illuminated, replace bulbs in pairs where practical, and clean the lenses when washing the car. It’s a small effort for a big visibility win.
What bulbs does a 2015 Toyota Vitz/Yaris tail-light use?
It depends on market and trim. Many AU/NZ Yaris models use replaceable incandescent bulbs for tail, stop, indicator and reverse, specified in the owner’s manual. Some Japan-market Vitz variants use LED rear combination lamps, where failed LEDs typically require replacement of the whole assembly. Always match bulb base and wattage to the manual or parts catalogue.
One tail-light is out — what should be checked first?
Start with the bulb, then the “TAIL” fuse and the relevant earth point. If multiple rear lamps misbehave, inspect the wiring in the rubber boot between the body and tailgate, as broken wires there can cause intermittent faults. Also check the bulb holder contacts for corrosion and that the connector is seated firmly.
Can aftermarket LED tail-lights be fitted and still pass WOF/rego?
Yes, provided the lamps comply with ADR/NZ lighting rules: correct colour (red for tail/stop, amber for indicators), adequate brightness, proper markings, and correct indicator flash rate. Use quality, compliant assemblies or bulbs, and avoid overly tinted lenses that reduce light output.
