2015 Toyota RAV4 wheel hubs — what they do and when to replace them

Wheel hubs absolutely are used on the 2015 Toyota RAV4. Toyota’s factory Repair Manual (TIS) for the XA40 RAV4 (2013–2018) and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue list front and rear hub and bearing components for both 2WD and AWD models. Technical bulletins from bearing makers (e.g., SKF/NTN) also describe the sealed, unitised hub/bearing design used on this generation. So the part is relevant and fitted from factory.

On the 2015 RAV4, the wheel hub is the solid mounting point for the wheel and brake rotor. It carries pressed-in wheel studs, supports the sealed bearing, and on ABS-equipped models works with an encoder ring and sensor to feed wheel speed data to the stability control system. Front hubs connect to the driveshaft splines (AWD and some 2WD variants), while rear hubs are bolt-in units, AWD rears are driven and splined, FWD rears are non-driven. The bearing is sealed for life, so there’s no greasing during routine servicing.

Good servicing practice is mostly about inspection and correct replacement when needed. A technician will check for roughness, play, and noise at each service, and make sure the ABS sensor area is clean. When a hub/bearing is tired, it’s typically replaced as a complete unit (rear), or bearing pressed in with the hub flange transferred (front), following the Toyota procedure.

  • What owners notice when a hub is going bad:
    • A humming or growling that rises with road speed, often changing when cornering
    • ABS/traction lights or erratic speed readings if the encoder/sensor is affected
    • Vibration through the seat or steering, and sometimes uneven tyre wear
  • Replacement and care tips for a 2015 RAV4:
    • Confirm the side with a proper road test and on-vehicle bearing check before ordering parts
    • Use quality hubs/bearings matched to drivetrain (FWD vs AWD) and ABS spec
    • Replace single-use hardware (axle nut, hub bolts) and torque everything to Toyota specs
    • Keep the ABS sensor clean and correctly seated, avoid hitting it with rust scale
    • After hub work, road test for noise and perform a wheel alignment check if the knuckle was disturbed

Technical references: Toyota RAV4 (XA40, 2013–2018) Repair Manual — Suspension & Axle sections (Hub/Bearing and Driveshaft), Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue, OEM bearing manufacturer fitment guides for unitised hub bearings and magnetic encoder rings.

Do 2015 RAV4s have wheel hubs on both front and rear?

Yes. Both axles use hub and bearing assemblies. The fronts carry the brake rotor and wheel studs and, on AWD, are splined to the driveshafts. The rears are bolt-in hub/bearing units, AWD rears are driven, FWD rears are non-driven. This layout is documented in Toyota’s RAV4 Repair Manual and EPC for the XA40 series.

How long do RAV4 wheel hubs last, and what shortens their life?

Many last well past 150,000 km, but life depends on road conditions, tyre/wheel impacts, and water/dirt ingress. Potholes, oversized wheels, and pressure-washing aimed at the hub can all accelerate wear. Once noise or play starts, the sealed bearing can’t be serviced — replacement is the fix.

Can a worn hub damage tyres or brakes?

It can. Excess play or roughness can create vibration that scuffs tyres, lengthens stopping distances, and upsets ABS/VSC operation. Replacing the faulty hub and rechecking alignment helps protect tyres and brake performance.
