2015 Audi Q5 oil pump — what it does, care tips, and when to replace
Referencing Audi technical sources — Self-Study Programme 605 for the EA888 Gen 3 2.0 TFSI, SSP 436 for the 3.0 V6 TFSI, SSP 423 for the 3.0 V6 TDI, plus the Audi Q5 2013–2017 Engine Mechanical repair manual in erWin/ELSA — the 2015 Audi Q5 is fitted with an engine oil pump across its petrol and diesel options. Depending on the engine, it’s a regulated or variable-displacement gear/trochoid pump, with the 2.0 TFSI using a balance-shaft/oil-pump module driven by chain.
The oil pump is the heart of the Q5’s lubrication system. It draws oil from the sump, pushes it through the filter, and feeds critical components — crankshaft, camshafts, turbocharger and timing gear — at the right pressure and flow. On many 2015 Q5 engines, the pump actively regulates pressure to cut drag and help fuel economy, bumping flow when they’re working hard and easing off at light load. Correct oil pressure keeps bearings floating, turbine shafts happy, and temperature under control, especially on long Kiwi and Aussie drives.
- Low oil-pressure warning or flickering lamp at idle
- Tappet/chain noise on cold starts that lingers
- Turbo whine or blue smoke after spirited runs
- Metallic glitter in oil, or sludge in the pickup
There’s no scheduled replacement interval for the pump
