2014 Volkswagen Amarok Oil Filter — What it does and when to change it

Technical confirmation first: Volkswagen factory workshop information (ERWIN/ELSA) and the VW ETKA parts catalogue list an engine oil filter for the 2014 Amarok 2.0 TDI sold in Australia and New Zealand. It’s a cartridge-style filter that sits in a housing on the top side of the engine, so an oil filter is absolutely fitted and relevant on this model.

The oil filter’s job on a 2014 Volkswagen Amarok is pretty straightforward but critical. As the TDI engine works hard—whether hauling gear, towing, or touring—microscopic metal particles, soot and general grime build up in the oil. The filter traps that muck so clean oil can protect bearings, cams and the turbocharger. Keeping the lube circuit clean helps maintain oil pressure, reduces wear, and supports good cold starts and long engine life.

For servicing in AU/NZ conditions, best practice is to replace the oil filter at every oil change—typically every 15,000 kilometres or 12 months, whichever comes first. If the Amarok sees lots of short trips, idling, dusty roads or heavy towing, dropping that to around 10,000 kilometres is a smart move. Always use the right spec oil (for most 2.0 TDI Amaroks with a DPF, look for VW 507.00 low-ash oil) and match the filter to the VIN. When fitting the cartridge, renew the O-ring, lightly oil it, seat the element correctly in the housing, and tighten the cap to the specified torque shown in the service info or on the housing. After the change, start and let it idle, check for leaks, and confirm oil level once it’s settled.

If an oil filter is overdue or poor quality, owners may notice dirty oil soon after servicing, a brief rattle on cold start, or even an oil pressure warning—none of which the Amarok deserves. A quality filter (genuine or reputable aftermarket) and the correct oil go a long way to smooth running and reliability. Dispose of used oil and filters responsibly, and keep records—buyers love a well-documented Amarok.

  • Change the filter with every oil service.
  • Replace and lubricate the O-ring
