2014 Toyota LandCruiser EGR Valve — What It Does and When to Service It

Based on Toyota technical sources — namely the LandCruiser 200 Series (VDJ200) repair manual EGR System section for the 1VD-FTV diesel, and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue which lists both an EGR valve and an EGR cooler for VDJ200R — the 2014 diesel LandCruiser is fitted with an EGR valve. Toyota literature for the petrol URJ202R (1UR‑FE) focuses on secondary air injection and does not show an external EGR valve. So for Australian and New Zealand 2014 models, the EGR valve is relevant to the common 4.5‑litre twin‑turbo V8 diesel, but generally not part of the petrol variant’s hardware.

On the 2014 LandCruiser 200 Series diesel, the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve helps cut NOx emissions by feeding a measured portion of exhaust back into the intake. That lowers combustion temperature, keeps the big V8 compliant with local emissions rules, and—when everything’s clean—doesn’t noticeably dent performance. The system teams up with an EGR cooler and the engine ECU to modulate flow based on load, revs, and temperature.

Because diesel soot and oil mist mingle in the intake, the EGR valve and passages can gum up over time. Drivers might notice rough idle, flat spots on acceleration, higher fuel use, a bit more smoke, or the MIL flicking on with codes like P0400–P0403. Left too long, it can push the vehicle into limp mode.

Good servicing habits keep it sweet under the bonnet:

  • Inspection/cleaning interval: plan to inspect and clean the EGR valve, cooler passages, and intake manifold around every 80,000–120,000 km. Heavy towing, lots of short trips, or dusty work can bring that forward to 50,000–80,000 km.
  • Quality consumables: use low‑ash, spec‑correct oil and good diesel to reduce deposits.
  • Active checks: a scan tool can run EGR active tests and show commanded vs. actual flow
