2014 Toyota bB – Is there a drive-belt tensioner on this model?
For the 2014 Toyota bB (QNC20/QNC21/QNC25 series), a conventional spring‑loaded drive‑belt tensioner isn’t fitted. This model, which runs Daihatsu‑sourced K3‑VE (1.3L) or 3SZ‑VE (1.5L) engines, uses a different approach to accessory belt tension.
On these engines, the main V‑ribbed belt (driving the alternator and, depending on spec, the water pump) is tensioned by moving the alternator along its bracket/adjuster rather than using a separate automatic tensioner assembly. Some variants also use a stretch‑fit belt for the A/C compressor, which is designed to be installed with a special tool and kept tight by its own elasticity—again, no separate tensioner required.
Why did Toyota/Daihatsu do it this way? It’s a neat mix of simplicity, packaging, and cost. The alternator‑adjuster method reduces parts count and potential failure points, while a stretch belt saves space at the front of the engine. For owners, it means there isn’t a “tensioner assembly” to replace
