2014 Audi Q5 Batteries – What They Do and How to Look After Them
Based on technical references including the 2014 Audi Q5 Owner’s Manual (electrical system and vehicle battery sections), Audi’s workshop procedures (battery energy management and start/stop requirements), and major fitment guides from Bosch and Exide, the 2014 Audi Q5 absolutely uses a 12‑volt battery. Most variants are factory-fitted with an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) unit to support start/stop and the vehicle’s battery energy management system.
In this Q5 (Typ 8R), the battery sits in the boot under the floor. Its job is more than just cranking the engine: it stabilises the electrical system for safety tech, infotainment, lighting, and stop/start functionality. Audi’s energy management monitors state of charge via an intelligent sensor on the negative terminal, and adjusts charging to protect the battery and keep systems happy.
As part of regular servicing, the battery deserves a quick health check. For vehicles with start/stop, an AGM battery of the correct capacity (commonly around 80–95Ah, H7/LN4 size) should be used. Swapping to a cheaper flooded battery can upset start/stop and shorten service life. After replacement, the Q5 expects the new battery to be “registered” or adapted in the control unit so charging strategy matches the battery’s type, capacity, and age. Audi dealers do this via ODIS
