2012 Toyota Mark X Headlights
Headlights are absolutely fitted to the 2012 Toyota Mark X (X130 series). Technical references including the Toyota Owner’s Manual for the X130 and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) list complete headlamp assemblies and service parts for this model, with common fitments being HID (xenon) projector low beams (D4S) and halogen high beams (HB3/9005). Some grades may use halogen low beams, depending on specification. Many HID-equipped grades also feature auto-levelling and, on certain trims, headlamp washers.
On the Mark X, the headlights do the obvious job—lighting the road ahead—but they also keep the car compliant with Australian Design Rules and NZ WOF requirements by providing the correct beam pattern, brightness and aim for left-hand traffic. Good headlights help the driver see hazards earlier and make the vehicle more visible to others in rain, fog and twilight.
For servicing, it’s smart to check the headlights at every service or six months. Look for dimming, flicker, colour shift (HID bulbs turning pink/purple), or uneven brightness—these hint at a tired bulb or a ballast on the way out. Cloudy, yellowed lenses are common on older polycarbonate units and can be restored with a proper UV-sealed polish. If there’s moisture inside the lamp, inspect the rear dust caps and seals.
Bulb replacement is straightforward, but a few pointers keep things tidy and safe:
- Confirm bulb types in the owner’s manual or by checking the existing bulb: commonly D4S for HID low beam and HB3/9005 for high beam, some trims use H11 for low beam.
- Avoid touching the glass of halogen or HID bulbs, oils shorten bulb life.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for consistent colour and brightness.
- After any front-end work, have the beam aim checked—mis-aim can fail a WOF or roadworthy.
- For HID systems, if a new bulb still flickers, the ballast or igniter may be at fault.
- Stick with quality, ADR-compliant parts and avoid higher-wattage bulbs that can overheat housings.
If upgrading, note that many LED or HID retrofits into halogen housings aren’t legal for road use in AU/NZ unless the assembly is approved. Keeping the Mark X’s lights genuine-spec ensures proper cut-off, minimal glare and a hassle-free WOF.
Popular questions about 2012 Toyota Mark X headlights
What bulb types fit a 2012 Toyota Mark X?
Most 2012 Mark X grades use D4S HID for the low beam and HB3/9005 for the high beam. Some trims run halogen low beams (commonly H11). Always confirm against the owner’s manual or the existing bulb markings, as JDM trim variations exist.
Why do my HID headlights flicker or turn pink?
HID bulbs wear out and can flicker or shift to a pink/purple hue as they age. If a fresh D4S bulb doesn’t fix it, the ballast or igniter may be failing. Check power supply, fuses and earths, then test or replace the ballast.
Are LED headlight conversions legal on a Mark X in AU/NZ?
Generally, replacing a halogen or HID bulb with an LED in the original housing isn’t road-legal unless the complete assembly is certified to local standards. Non-compliant conversions can cause glare and may fail WOF or roadworthy checks. Use approved parts or keep to OEM-spec.
