2012 Toyota HiLux Drive Belt — What It Does and When to Replace
Based on technical sources, a drive belt is absolutely relevant and fitted to the 2012 Toyota HiLux. The Toyota Hilux Repair Manual for the KUN/GGN series (2011–2015) includes inspection and replacement procedures for the “fan and generator V-ribbed belt” (drive belt), and major aftermarket catalogues (Gates/Dayco) list serpentine belts for 2012 HiLux engines including 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV diesels, plus 1GR-FE and 2TR-FE petrols. So this model runs an accessory drive belt as standard.
On a 2012 HiLux, the multi-rib (serpentine) drive belt powers essential accessories at the front of the engine. It spins the alternator to keep the battery charged, drives the air-con compressor for cool air, and turns the power steering pump on models with hydraulic assist. Depending on the engine, it may also drive the water pump. Without a healthy belt, charging, steering and air-con can all drop their bundle quickly.
Servicing-wise, the belt should be checked at every routine service. A good rule for Aussie and Kiwi conditions—heat, dust and stop–start work—is to inspect every 10–15,000 km and replace around 80–120,000 km or 6 years, whichever comes first, or sooner if wear shows. The 2012 diesel HiLux (1KD/2KD) also has a separate timing belt for the camshaft drive that’s typically due at 150,000 km
