2012 Toyota Avensis coolant — what it does and how to look after it

Coolant is absolutely relevant and used on every 2012 Toyota Avensis engine variant (petrol and diesel). Toyota’s 2012 Avensis Owner’s Manual and Toyota service literature specify Toyota Genuine Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC, pink, pre-mixed) for the cooling system, with long-life replacement intervals. Toyota’s SLLC product documentation also outlines its corrosion-inhibiting chemistry for alloy components and its 50/50 pre-mix design for ready use.

In the Avensis, coolant does far more than stop the engine from overheating. It carries heat away from the block and head, resists boiling in hot Aussie and Kiwi summers, prevents freezing in alpine conditions, and protects alloy, steel and rubber components from corrosion and scale. It also helps lubricate the water pump seal, reducing the chance of weeps and early failures.

Toyota specifies using Toyota Genuine SLLC (pink) only. It’s a pre-mixed ethylene glycol coolant with long-life inhibitors tailored for Toyota alloys and seals. Mixing different types or colours can shorten service life or reduce protection, so topping up with the same SLLC is the go. Under-bonnet checks should be done on a cold engine via the translucent expansion tank
