2012 Nissan Dualis oil pump — what it does and when to sort it

Yes, the 2012 Nissan Dualis (J10) is fitted with an engine oil pump. On the common 2.0‑litre MR20DE petrol used in Australia and New Zealand, the pump is an internal trochoid design, driven directly by the crankshaft and integrated into the front timing chain cover. This layout is documented in Nissan’s Factory Service Manual for the J10/MR20DE in the Engine Mechanical (EM) section, and the pump assembly is listed in Nissan’s electronic parts catalogue (FAST) for the 2012 Dualis/Qashqai range. Other J10 engines (such as HR16DE and K9K in some markets) are likewise specified with dedicated engine oil pumps in their EM sections.

The oil pump’s job is simple but critical: it pulls oil from the sump, pushes it through the filter, and feeds the galleries that lubricate crank and cam bearings, the timing chain and tensioner, and other moving bits. It also helps with cooling and keeping hydraulic components happy. Without steady pressure and flow, metal-on-metal contact ramps up wear in no time.

Unlike filters and spark plugs, the pump isn’t a routine replacement item. Sensible servicing keeps it healthy: use the correct oil grade and quality noted in the owner’s handbook, change oil and filter on time, and never ignore a low oil pressure warning. If the engine has had sludge issues, a blocked pickup screen can starve the pump
