2010 Volvo XC60 temperature sensors — purpose, care and when to replace
Temperature sensors absolutely are fitted to, and relevant on, the 2010 Volvo XC60. Volvo’s factory service platform (VIDA, 2010 XC60 service information and wiring diagrams) specifies multiple temperature sensors used by the Engine Control Module (ECM), Climate Control Module (CCM), and Transmission Control Module (TCM). VIDA details the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, intake air temperature (often integrated in the MAF), ambient/outside air temperature sensor for the CCM and instrument display, and an evaporator temperature sensor for the A/C. The Aisin six‑speed (TF‑80SC) automatic used in the XC60 monitors transmission fluid temperature via an internal sensor. Diesel variants (e.g., D5) also use exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors around the turbo/DPF. These functions are also described in Volvo technical publications and Aisin TF‑80SC service documentation.
On a 2010 XC60, temperature sensors help the vehicle stay efficient, reliable and comfortable. The ECT sensor lets the ECM manage cold starts, fuelling, ignition timing and radiator fan strategy. The intake air sensor fine‑tunes mixture and boost control (on turbo petrol/diesel). The ambient sensor informs the climate control and the outside‑temperature display, while the evaporator sensor stops the A/C from icing up. The transmission fluid temperature input decides shift feel and protects the gearbox when it’s working hard on hot days. On diesels, EGT sensors protect the turbo/DPF and enable accurate regeneration.
These sensors generally don’t need routine replacement, but they do benefit from checks during scheduled servicing:
- Scan for fault codes and compare live data (coolant temp versus actual cold/hot engine, ambient temp plausibility).
- Inspect connectors for corrosion, oil wicking or damaged wiring, especially the ambient sensor behind the front bumper and the MAF/IAT under the bonnet.
- Keep the cooling system healthy (correct coolant spec and interval)
