2010 Toyota Prius radiator — purpose, servicing and replacement

Based on Toyota’s own technical literature — including the New Car Features (ZVW30) for 2010, the Toyota Repair Manual for the 2ZR-FXE engine, and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue — the 2010 Toyota Prius is fitted with an engine radiator, and it also uses a separate cooling loop and front-mounted heat exchanger for the hybrid inverter/converter. So yes, a radiator is very much relevant on this model.

On a 2010 Prius, the radiator’s job is to pull heat out of the 1.8‑litre Atkinson-cycle engine coolant and dump it to the air as the car moves or the electric fans kick in. It works alongside the thermostat, an electric engine water pump (no belts here), and a pressure cap to keep the engine running at the sweet spot for efficiency and emissions. Because this Prius also has a dedicated hybrid system loop, owners will see two translucent reservoirs under the bonnet — one for the engine and one for the inverter — and they should never be mixed.

  • Coolant: Use Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC), the pink premix. Toyota specifies an initial change at about 160,000 km or 10 years, then every 80,000 km or 5 years after that.
  • Checks: Inspect the radiator fins for bugs and road grime
