2010 Suzuki SX4 oil pump: purpose, care, and when to replace

Based on Suzuki’s factory Service Manual lubrication section and the Suzuki Electronic Parts Catalogue for the 2010 SX4 (covering the M16A 1.6-litre and J20B 2.0-litre petrol engines and the 1.9 DDiS diesel), this model absolutely uses an engine oil pump. It’s a crankshaft-driven trochoid/gerotor pump integrated with the front/timing cover, with a built-in pressure relief valve.

For the 2010 Suzuki SX4, the oil pump’s whole job is keeping a steady flow of clean oil to bearings, camshafts, timing chain components, and (on petrol variants) the variable valve timing gear. It pulls oil through the pickup strainer in the sump, pressurises it, and pushes it through galleries and the filter. Without solid oil pressure, the engine will quickly wear, overheat at contact points, and can suffer bearing or cam damage.

As a rule, the pump itself isn’t a routine replacement item
