2010 BMW X3 brake shoes — what they do and when to replace

Its service brakes are four-wheel discs with pads, while the parking brake uses small drum-style shoes inside the “hat” of the rear brake discs. So, brake shoes are absolutely relevant to this model, just not for normal stopping.

The parking brake shoes on the E83 X3 clamp against the inner drum surface of the rear discs to hold the vehicle when parked. They’re handy on hills, help meet WOF/roadworthy standards, and provide a solid mechanical backup if the car’s left in neutral. They don’t usually see the heat and wear of daily braking, but they can still glaze, go out of adjustment, delaminate with age, or get contaminated by a weeping hub seal.

Good servicing practice for a 2010 X3 includes inspecting the parking brake shoes whenever the rear discs/pads are done, or every 40,000–60,000 km. Look for even lining thickness, firm linings bonded to the shoe, and clean, un-scored drum surfaces inside the rear rotors. Because the main braking is handled by disc pads, some drivers forget the shoes are there until the handbrake stops holding. Keeping them adjusted and fresh prevents failed inspections and protects the inner drum surface of the rear rotors. On higher-kilometre or coastal vehicles, also check the backing plates and actuators for corrosion and free movement.
