2010 Audi Q5 radiator — purpose, care and replacement

A radiator is absolutely fitted to the 2010 Audi Q5. Audi’s official service literature (ElsaWin workshop manual for the 8R Q5), the 2010 Q5 owner’s manual cooling-system section, and Audi AG technical training (Self‑Study Programme on the Q5) all describe a front-mounted, crossflow aluminium radiator working with electric fans, a thermostat and an expansion tank. Audi’s parts catalogue for the 8R platform also lists the radiator within the front-end cooling module, confirming it’s a standard component on petrol and diesel Q5 variants.

On this model, the radiator’s job is to dump heat from the engine coolant to the outside air, keeping operating temperatures steady in city traffic, long Aussie outback runs or hilly Kiwi roads. It sits in the cooling stack with the A/C condenser and, on some variants, auxiliary coolers. The fans pull air through at low speed, while the thermostat and control modules fine-tune flow and fan speed so the engine runs in its sweet spot for power, economy and emissions.

Owners often first notice radiator trouble as pink crust around the plastic–aluminium crimp joints, a sweet coolant smell, a slow drop in the expansion tank level, or overheating at idle with the fans roaring. Left too long, small leaks can become a split tank, and heat stress isn’t kind to head gaskets or plastic housings.

As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to:

  • Inspect the radiator core and end tanks yearly for leaks, damage and blocked fins
