2009 Toyota Mark X headlight bulbs
Headlight bulbs are very much relevant to the 2009 Toyota Mark X. Toyota’s owner’s manual and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue for the GRX130/133 series indicate replaceable bulbs: many grades use a D4S 35 W HID (xenon) for the low beam with an HB3 (9005) halogen high beam, while halogen-equipped trims use H11 low beam and HB3 high beam. Koito lamp specifications used by Toyota for this model reflect the same fitments. So yes—this Mark X runs conventional replaceable headlight bulbs.
On the road, those bulbs do the heavy lifting after dark—projecting a clean, legal beam pattern for visibility without dazzling oncoming traffic. HID-equipped cars offer a whiter, broader spread, halogen variants are simple, tough and affordable. Either way, clear, correctly aimed bulbs mean safer night driving and easier WOF/regos.
Bulbs age. Halogens slowly dim and yellow, HIDs can shift colour and may flicker as they near end-of-life. A good rule is to replace halogen bulbs in pairs when light output drops, and consider refreshing HIDs around the 5–8 year/100,000+ km mark. Stick with OEM-spec colour temperatures (around 4300–5000K) for the best wet-road performance and compliance—deep blue tints might look “cool” but usually hurt visibility.
If the Mark X has HIDs, treat them with respect: there’s high voltage in the igniter/ballast. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and let the system sit before removing caps or bulbs. Never touch the glass on halogen or HID bulbs—use gloves to avoid hot spots and early failure.
- Park on level ground, handbrake on, bonnet up. If HID, disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes.
- Remove the rear headlamp dust cover. Identify the bulb: H11/HB3 twist out, D4S sits behind a locking ring/retainer.
- Unclip the connector. For halogen, twist anticlockwise and withdraw. For D4S, release the retainer and pull straight out.
- Install the new bulb without touching the glass. Seat the O-ring, lock in place, reconnect, and refit the dust cover.
- Switch on and check beam height on a wall. If both sides are dead, check the headlight fuses/relay, HID flicker can point to a tired bulb or ballast.
Keep lenses clean, clear drain holes, and replace perished caps to prevent condensation. If the lenses are cloudy, a proper restoration kit can bring back clarity and beam focus. During servicing, a quick aim check and output check is cheap insurance for night driving.
What bulb types fit a 2009 Toyota Mark X?
Most HID-equipped cars use D4S for low beam and HB3 (9005) for high beam. Halogen trims typically run H11 low beam and HB3 high beam. Always confirm against the owner’s manual or by VIN, as market and grade differences exist.
Can the Mark X upgrade to LED bulbs?
Physically, many LED retrofits will fit H11/HB3 sockets, but in Australia and New Zealand most LED conversions in halogen housings aren’t road-legal unless the whole assembly is certified. Beam pattern and glare can suffer. For street use, stick with quality halogen or OEM HID, keep LEDs for off-road or use approved lamp units.
Why do HID bulbs change colour or flicker?
HIDs age as the capsule chemistry degrades, often shifting towards purple/blue and losing output. Flicker can be a failing bulb, weak ballast, or poor connections. Replace bulbs in pairs with the same spec, if flicker remains, test the ballast and wiring.
