2009 Toyota Avensis headlights: what they do and how to look after them

Headlights are absolutely relevant and factory-fitted on the 2009 Toyota Avensis. This is supported by the Toyota Avensis Owner’s Manual (2009, Lighting section), Toyota service literature for the T27 series, and lighting requirements set out in UNECE regulations for road-going vehicles. Depending on trim and market, the Avensis came with halogen reflector/projector units or optional HID/Xenon units with self-levelling and washers.

On this Avensis, the headlights do the heavy lifting after dark and in poor weather: they throw a clean, legal beam so the driver can see the road and be seen by others. Properly functioning headlights help with lane placement on unlit rural roads, spotting hazards early, and staying compliant with local Warrant of Fitness/roadworthy checks. Even in daylight, clear lenses and the right aim improve conspicuity, which is handy during rain squalls and low winter sun common in Aus and NZ.

As part of regular servicing, it pays to add the headlights to the checklist. Test low and high beam, indicators and park lamps, and make sure the beam pattern is even and not pointing too high. Give the lenses a clean with car-shampoo and microfibre
