2009 Subaru Impreza brake rotors

Based on Subaru factory service information for the GE/GH platform (2008–2011) and OEM parts catalogues, the 2009 Subaru Impreza is equipped with ventilated front disc brake rotors across all variants. Many trims in Australia and New Zealand also use rear disc rotors, while some entry-level models in other markets ran rear drums. Either way, brake rotors are absolutely relevant on this model because the front axle uses them as standard.

On a 2009 Impreza, the brake rotor (disc) works with the caliper and pads to turn the car’s speed into heat, giving confident, straight-line stopping. The vented front rotors shed heat quickly to reduce fade on steep Kiwi passes or during hot Aussie summers. Healthy rotors keep pedal feel consistent and help the ABS do its job when the road turns wet and greasy.

  • Common signs the rotors need attention: steering shudder under braking, pulsation through the pedal, visible scoring or blue heat spots, longer stopping distances, or a lip at the rotor’s edge.
  • Inspection tip: check rotor thickness against the minimum spec stamped on the rotor hat (or in service data), and measure runout with a dial gauge if shudder is present.

As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to inspect pads and rotors every 10,000–15,000 km (or at each service). Replace rotors if they’re at/below minimum thickness, cracked, heavily heat-checked, or if runout can’t be corrected. Resurfacing is fine when the rotor will still be above minimum thickness afterwards and cooling vanes are clear
