2009 Nissan Pathfinder Brake Fluid – What It Does and When to Change It

Brake fluid is absolutely relevant and used on the 2009 Nissan Pathfinder. Technical sources including the 2009 Nissan Pathfinder Owner’s Manual and the R51 Service Manual (Brake – BR section) specify a hydraulic braking system that requires NISSAN Brake Fluid or DOT 3 meeting FMVSS No. 116. The reservoir cap is typically marked with the spec, and the ABS/VDC hydraulic module also depends on clean, correct-spec fluid to operate properly.

On this Pathfinder, brake fluid transfers pedal force into clamping power at the calipers, while also lubricating and protecting internal components. Because it’s hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture), the boiling point drops over time, which can lead to a spongy pedal, longer stopping distances and, in hard use, brake fade. Moisture and contaminants can also corrode the master cylinder, ABS modulator and calipers if the fluid isn’t kept fresh.

As part of regular servicing in Australia and New Zealand conditions, a good rule of thumb is a brake fluid flush every 2 years or around 40,000 km, or sooner if testing shows low boiling point or there’s evidence of contamination. The manuals note DOT 3 is the required grade
