2008 Volvo XC60 Head Gasket — What It Does and How to Look After It
According to Volvo’s factory workshop information (VIDA) and OEM parts catalogues for the first-generation XC60 launched in 2008, every petrol and diesel engine fitted to this model uses a cylinder head gasket. It’s a critical multi-layer steel seal sandwiched between the engine block and cylinder head.
On a 2008 Volvo XC60, the head gasket has three big jobs: keep combustion pressure sealed so the engine makes proper power, keep coolant and oil in their own passages, and stop those fluids from mixing. Because the XC60’s alloy head and block expand at different rates as temperatures change, Volvo specifies a robust gasket and torque-to-yield head bolts to maintain clamping force.
There’s no routine “service” for a head gasket, but the way the XC60 is maintained under the bonnet makes a world of difference. Fresh, correct-spec coolant, a healthy radiator and fans, and a thermostat that opens when it should all help prevent overheating — the number-one head-gasket killer. If the XC60 ever gets hot, it should be switched off promptly and the cause fixed before driving again.
When replacement is needed, it’s a proper workshop job. The head should be checked for flatness and cracks, sealing surfaces cleaned to the right finish, new head bolts installed, and timing components locked and retimed precisely. It’s also sensible to fit new ancillary gaskets and consider related items while access is easy, like the thermostat and any tired hoses. Expect a substantial labour bill and machining time
