2008 Volvo XC60 Brake Pads — Purpose, Service Advice and When to Replace

Brake pads are definitely used on the 2008 Volvo XC60. Technical sources including the Volvo XC60 Owner’s Manual (first edition for the launch model year), Volvo’s official VIDA service information, and major brake catalogues from Bendix, ATE and Brembo all specify disc brakes with replaceable pads front and rear. Early XC60 variants feature ventilated front discs, solid or ventilated rears (depending on engine/trim), and an electronic parking brake that acts on the rear callipers and pads.

On this model, the brake pads do the heavy lifting of slowing the SUV by clamping against the brake rotors to convert motion into heat. Quality pads keep pedal feel crisp, reduce stopping distance, and help the XC60’s safety systems (ABS, ESC, City Safety) perform as intended. Because the XC60 is a mid-size SUV, it puts more demand on its stoppers than a small hatch, so pad condition really matters for everyday commuting, towing and holiday runs across NZ and Australia.

As part of regular servicing, pads should be inspected for remaining friction material, even wear, glazing and heat spots. Many XC60 variants use a wear indicator on at least one front pad
