2008 Toyota Land Cruiser fuel pump — what it does and when to service it

A fuel pump is absolutely used on the 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser. Technical references like Toyota New Car Features (Land Cruiser 200 Series, 2007–), the Toyota Repair Manual (RM) and the Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD) describe an in‑tank electric fuel pump for the petrol V8, and for the 1VD‑FTV V8 diesel they specify an in‑tank lift pump feeding a Denso high‑pressure supply pump mounted on the engine. Those systems are integral to the Land Cruiser’s electronic fuel injection and common‑rail diesel architecture, so the pump is very much relevant to this model year.

What the fuel pump does is simple but critical: it draws fuel from the tank and delivers it at the right pressure and volume to the injectors. On petrol variants, the in‑tank electric pump maintains steady pressure for smooth starting, clean idle and consistent power. On diesel variants, the lift pump supplies clean fuel to the high‑pressure pump, which then generates the extreme rail pressures needed for efficient, torquey combustion.

There’s no fixed replacement interval for the pump itself
