2008 Toyota Hilux Surf wheel bearings — what they do and how to look after them

Wheel bearings are absolutely fitted to the 2008 Toyota Hilux Surf. Technical sources including Toyota’s workshop literature for the N210-series Hilux Surf/4Runner (2002–2009), the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue, and major aftermarket catalogues (SKF, Timken, Aisin) all specify front hub-and-bearing assemblies and rear axle bearings for this model year. The factory procedures cover both “Front Axle Hub (Wheel Bearing)” and “Rear Axle Shaft (Wheel Bearing)”, confirming the part is relevant and serviceable on a 2008 Surf.

On this 4x4, the front end uses a sealed hub-and-bearing unit that supports the wheel and takes both radial and axial loads while you corner, brake, and head down the motorway. It’s a non-serviceable assembly: when it wears, the hub/bearing gets replaced as a unit. Down the back, the Surf runs a solid rear axle with a press-fit, grease-packed wheel bearing on each axle shaft, retained with a collar and sealed to keep diff oil out of the brakes. Different designs front and rear, same goal: smooth, quiet rotation and precise wheel control.

Left too long, a tired bearing can chew out tyres, unsettle handling, and put extra stress on CVs and suspension. A tidy Surf will benefit from routine checks as part of scheduled servicing. Here’s what a switched-on owner or workshop should keep an eye on:
