2008 Toyota Crown headlight bulbs
Headlight bulbs are absolutely relevant to the 2008 Toyota Crown. Technical references such as the Toyota Crown S200 Series Owner’s Manual and Repair Manual, the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC), and DENSO/Koito lamp catalogues list replaceable headlight light sources for this model year. Depending on grade, the Crown uses either HID (xenon) low-beam capsules or halogen bulbs, with separate high-beam bulbs.
On the 2008 Crown, the headlight bulbs serve the obvious job of lighting the road ahead and making the vehicle visible to others, but they also have to meet beam pattern and brightness requirements for Aussie and Kiwi roads. Many Crowns of this era—especially Athlete, Royal Saloon with options, and the Hybrid (GWS204)—run self-levelling HID low beams using D4S capsules. Other trims can have halogen low beams. High beam is typically a halogen bulb.
- Low beam: D4S HID (most higher trims) or H11 halogen (some trims)
- High beam: HB3 (9005) halogen
As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to check operation, clarity, and aim. HID capsules gradually lose output and shift colour over time, halogens dim and the filaments weaken. If one side looks pinkish or dull (HID) or noticeably dimmer (halogen), plan a replacement—ideally in pairs so the beam colour and brightness match.
- Confirm the exact bulb types from the build plate, owner’s manual, or EPC—Crown variants differ.
- For HID: switch off, remove the key, and disconnect the 12V battery, HID systems carry high voltage via the ballast. Allow a few minutes for discharge.
- Wear clean gloves. Don’t touch bulb glass, oils shorten bulb life.
- Replace like-for-like: D4S for HID Crown, H11/HB3 for halogen-only positions. Avoid mixing types.
- Refit dust caps and seals carefully to keep moisture out.
- After replacement, check headlight aim and pattern against a wall or with a beamsetter. Adjust if needed.
Expected life varies: halogens often 2–4 years of mixed use, HID capsules 5–10 years. City night driving shortens that. If the lenses are cloudy, consider a headlight restoration—fresh bulbs behind hazy lenses won’t perform properly. For LED conversions, only use ADR/WoF-compliant solutions with a correct beam pattern, otherwise it can dazzle oncoming traffic and fail inspection.
FAQs
What headlight bulb types fit a 2008 Toyota Crown?
Most higher-spec S200 Crowns use D4S HID for low beam and HB3 (9005) for high beam. Some trims use H11 halogen for low beam instead. Always confirm against the vehicle’s manual or EPC because Japanese domestic imports can vary by grade and option package.
Should headlight bulbs be replaced in pairs?
Yes. Both halogen and HID bulbs dim over time. Replacing just one can leave mismatched colour and output, which looks odd and can affect the beam pattern. Pair replacement keeps lighting even and predictable.
Can the Crown use LED headlight bulbs?
It’s possible, but only if the LED kit is specifically approved and maintains a compliant beam pattern. In AU/NZ, non-compliant LED swaps can fail a WoF/roadworthy and may glare other drivers. HID-equipped Crowns should stay with correct D4S capsules unless a compliant conversion is engineered.
