2008 Toyota Camry centre-bearing: is it fitted or needed?

For the 2008 Toyota Camry (XV40 series: ACV40 four‑cyl and GSV40 V6), a traditional prop‑shaft centre support bearing isn’t used. Technical literature confirms the Camry is a transverse, front‑wheel‑drive platform with no two‑piece propeller shaft. The Toyota Camry 2007–2011 Repair Manual (Drivetrain/Axle – Front Drive Shaft), Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue for ACV40/GSV40, and the New Car Features guide for XV40 all show front drive shafts (CV axles) and an optional right‑hand intermediate shaft with a support bearing, but no propeller shaft or centre support bearing. Aftermarket references such as the Haynes Toyota Camry 2007–2011 manual likewise cover CV axles and do not list a centre support bearing.

Why isn’t a centre-bearing used? A centre support bearing is designed for rear‑wheel‑drive or all‑wheel‑drive vehicles with a long, two‑piece propeller shaft. It supports the shaft mid‑span, controlling whip and angles at higher speeds and over bumps. The 2008 Camry’s front‑wheel‑drive transaxle sits next to the engine, driving two short CV axles directly to the hubs, so there’s no long prop shaft to support. Instead, some variants use a right‑hand intermediate (jack) shaft with a bracket and bearing bolted to the engine block or transaxle casing. That bearing is sometimes casually called a “carrier” or “centre” bearing, but it’s a different part from a prop‑shaft centre support bearing.

If a 2008 Camry owner is chasing a “centre‑bearing” noise or vibration, these are the usual culprits:

  • Right‑hand intermediate shaft support bearing rumble (where fitted)
  • Inner CV joint shudder on take‑off or under load
  • Worn engine or transmission mounts allowing excess movement
  • Front or rear wheel bearing drone that changes with speed
  • Tyre cupping or balance issues causing mid‑car vibration

Service tip: there’s no prop‑shaft centre support bearing to replace on a 2008 Camry. For vehicles with the RH intermediate shaft, check for play or roughness with the vehicle safely raised, and inspect the bracket bolts. Keep CV boots intact and address any grease leaks early to protect the joints and bearing. If the intermediate shaft bearing is noisy, many workshops replace the shaft assembly as a unit
