2008 Toyota Camry brake wheel cylinders: are they actually used?
For Australian and New Zealand–delivered 2008 Toyota Camry models (ACV40 series), brake wheel cylinders aren’t fitted. Toyota’s factory repair information for the ACV40/45 platform, together with Toyota Australia’s 2008 Camry specifications and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue for local market cars, all show rear disc brakes with callipers across the range. Wheel cylinders are a drum-brake component, so they simply don’t appear on ANZ-spec 2008 Camry rear brakes.
Why’s that the case? Wheel cylinders sit inside a drum and push the brake shoes outwards. The 2008 Camry sold here uses rear disc brakes, which rely on hydraulic callipers and pistons squeezing pads against a rotor. Different hardware, same job—so there’s no place for a wheel cylinder on these cars.
Technical references enthusiasts and workshops typically consult include: Toyota Camry ACV40/45 Repair Manual (Chassis – Brake System), Toyota Australia 2008 Camry product specifications, and the Toyota EPC for ACV40R (AU/NZ market). These documents list rear solid disc brakes and serviceable calliper parts (pads, sliders, seals), but no rear wheel cylinder assembly.
If someone’s unsure what’s on their Camry, a quick check helps:
- Look through the rear wheel: a shiny rotor with a calliper = disc brakes
