2008 Toyota Camry Brake Fluid — What It Does and When to Change It

Brake fluid absolutely applies to the 2008 Toyota Camry. Toyota’s own technical literature for this model specifies a hydraulic braking system that uses brake fluid meeting FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 (SAE J1703). Toyota service schedules in Australia and New Zealand also call for routine brake fluid replacement as part of the logbook servicing. That means it’s a core consumable on any 2008 Camry, whether it’s a 2.4, 3.5, or Hybrid variant with ABS and stability control.

What’s the job of brake fluid? It transmits pedal force to the master cylinder, ABS modulator and calipers, so the car stops straight and true. It also lubricates internal seals and helps resist corrosion inside lines and valves. Because glycol-based brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the air, as noted in SAE J1703/DOT 3 standards), its boiling point drops over time. Moisture build-up can lead to a soft or long pedal on steep descents, plus internal rust that shortens the life of ABS valves and calipers.

For a 2008 Camry, Toyota documentation specifies DOT 3 brake fluid. Many workshops in AU/NZ use high-quality DOT 3 that meets or exceeds the spec
