2008 Ford Transit knock-sensor: is it actually there?
For most 2008 Ford Transit models sold in Australia and New Zealand, a knock-sensor isn’t fitted because the vans were predominantly equipped with Duratorq TDCi diesel engines (2.2L and 2.4L “Puma”). Technical documentation backs this up: Ford’s 2006.5–2013 Transit Workshop Manual for the Duratorq TDCi lists no knock-sensor in the component or wiring schedules for these diesels, Ford ETIS/IDS wiring diagrams for the 2008 Transit diesel show no knock-sensor circuit, and common service data sources such as Autodata/AllData and the Haynes Transit Diesel manual (2006–2013) describe the diesel engine management without a knock-sensor.
Why no knock-sensor on the diesel? Unlike a petrol engine—where a knock-sensor helps the ECU pull timing if it hears detonation—a diesel controls combustion by injection timing, rail pressure and multiple injection events. The “diesel knock” you sometimes hear is characteristic of compression-ignition and is managed by fuelling strategy instead of a microphone-style sensor on the block. The Transit’s diesel ECU relies on other inputs to keep things smooth and safe, including:
- Crankshaft and camshaft position (for precise injection timing)
- Fuel rail pressure and temperature (to shape injection events)
- MAF/MAP and boost control (to manage air charge)
- Coolant, intake air and exhaust temperature sensing (to protect hardware)
There is one notable exception. In some markets, a 2008 Transit could be supplied with a 2.3L Duratec petrol/LPG engine, and that engine family typically uses a knock-sensor mounted to the block. If a van is petrol-powered, there may indeed be a knock-sensor fitted. The quickest way to confirm is by checking the engine type on the build plate/VIN data or inspecting the block beneath the intake area for a single two-pin sensor bolted to the crankcase.
If the vehicle is a diesel (as most AU/NZ vans are), a “missing knock-sensor” isn’t a fault—there simply isn’t one in the design. If a scan tool reports knock-sensor codes on a diesel Transit, it’s usually a mismatched engine profile in the tool, an ECU file from a different engine variant, or a swapped powertrain. For petrol variants that do have a knock-sensor, it’s a no-regular-service item: replacement is only needed if fault codes or drivability symptoms point to it, and it should be torqued to spec on a clean block face to read vibrations correctly.
