2008 Ford Ranger water-pump: what it does and when to replace it

Based on the Ford Workshop Manual for the 2008 Ranger (Section 303-03 Engine Cooling—2.3L, 3.0L and 4.0L) and the Ford Ranger PJ/PK Workshop Manual used in Australia and New Zealand for the 2.5L and 3.0L Duratorq TDCi diesels (Cooling System), every 2008 Ford Ranger variant is fitted with a belt-driven engine water-pump. Those factory manuals describe the pump’s role, specifications and removal/installation procedures, confirming the water-pump is absolutely relevant to servicing a 2008 Ford Ranger.

The water-pump circulates coolant through the block, head, heater core and radiator, keeping the ute at the right operating temperature. It helps prevent overheating under load, stabilises cabin heater performance in winter, and protects the engine from hotspots that can lead to gasket failures or warped components.
