2008 Ford Mondeo fuel pump — what it does and when to replace it

Yes, a fuel pump is relevant and used on the 2008 Ford Mondeo. Technical references including the Ford TIS/ETIS workshop information for the 2007–2014 Mondeo, the Haynes Manual for Mondeo Petrol & Diesel (2007 to Sept 2014), and Autodata all document pump-equipped fuel systems across the range. Petrol Duratec engines use an in-tank electric pump module, 2.0/2.2 TDCi diesels use an in-tank lift pump feeding a high-pressure pump on the engine, and the 1.8 TDCi relies on the engine-mounted high-pressure pump to draw fuel (no electric in-tank pump on that variant).

The pump’s job is simple but critical: move fuel from the tank and supply the engine at the right pressure and flow so it starts cleanly and pulls strongly. On petrol models it’s a constant-pressure in-tank unit. On common-rail diesels the in-tank pump (where fitted) feeds a separate high-pressure pump that builds rail pressure for the injectors.

As part of servicing a 2008 Mondeo, there’s no scheduled “pump service”, but a few habits keep it happy: replace the fuel filter on time, avoid running the tank near empty (it cools and lubricates the pump), and use quality fuel. If the car shows hard starting, hesitation on hills, a loud whining from the tank area, or logs fuel pressure/rail codes such as P0087 or P0191, check the filter, fuses/relay, wiring and fuel pressure data before calling the pump.

Replacement tips vary by engine:

  • Petrol and 2.0/2.2 TDCi: the in-tank pump is part of a module accessible under the rear seat base via an access panel, so there’s usually no need to drop the tank. Fit a new seal, align the sender float, and torque the locking ring correctly.
  • 1.8 TDCi: no electric in-tank pump. If you’ve changed the filter and it won’t start, prime the system fully with the hand primer and check for air leaks in the lines. Poor starting or metal debris points to high-pressure pump wear, which needs specialist repair and thorough system cleaning.

Safety first: depressurise the system, disconnect the battery, and work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks. A proper fuel pressure test and scan-tool data will save guesswork and money.

  • Does a 2008 Mondeo have a pump in the tank?
Petrol engines do, and so do 2.0/2.2 TDCi diesels. The 1.8 TDCi doesn’t use an electric in-tank pump
